What the Heck Will Elroy Do Next? He’s Back!

How a 90s Fan Craving Sparked a 2026 Headbone Interactive Steam Gaming Revival

Sometimes, the past doesn’t just knock on your door—it knocks, writes letters and sends code attempts all the way from Germany.

Back in the 1990s, Headbone Interactive set out to do something delightfully different in gaming: create smart, rambunctious, hand-animated interactive adventures that felt less like traditional software and more like classic cartoon comedy. Reviews at the time captured the magic best—Wired called the company’s first title Elroy Goes Bugzerk “Sherman and Mr. Peabody gone interactive, or a ’90s multimedia Rocky and Bullwinkle,” while PC Gamer declared it had “more sparks than a meteor shower.”

For years, fans who grew up alongside Elroy and his trusty hound dog, Blue, kept asking the same question: Where can we play Headbone games today? Dedicated retro-gamers and original fans tried time and again to port the old Headbone CD-ROMs to modern screens, (including The Elroy Series, Iz and Auggie Series, and The Gigglebone Gang Series) but tech limitations kept Elroy and his gang out of reach.

Fast forward to 2026.

In what can only be described as the stars aligning, former Headbone Interactive founder Susan Lammers—who, in another twist of 2026 cosmic timing, is also celebrating the 40th Anniversary Edition of her book Programmers At Work (8080 Books)—found herself at the center of a revival.

A small but mighty squad came together for Lamazam Studios: original Headbone Animation Director Chuck Gamble teamed up with seasoned lead software developer Jeremy Stone to do something challenging yet purely fun. Working together with Susan’s new company, Lamazam Studios LLC, this dream team pulled off the impossible—bringing Elroy back to life for modern gaming platforms.

We don’t quite know what cosmic alignment caused everything to happen at once, but we’re embracing the chaos. Rebuilding Elroy isn’t just nostalgia for us—it’s about bringing that wildly creative, hand-drawn, happy-go-lucky Headbone spirit to a whole new generation.
